TRTL BOT minimalist iPhone 4 case is Eco-Friendly … But ugly [Review]

Killian Bell (01:00 pm, June 28, 2011)

The BOT TRTL minimalist 4 ($ 30) is a case of eco-friendly iPhone 4 made entirely of recycled plastic bottles. Attempts to replace your portfolio by providing a card slot on the back of the case which will house up to three credit cards, protecting your device from scratches, scrapes and scratches with a robust shell that clings to the band around your iPhone in stainless steel.

The good:

The minimalist 4 allows you to leave your wallet at home and bring your credit cards with your iPhone instead. Reduces the number of items you need to carry in your purse or Pocket and can be a lifesaver for those with a tendency to abandon their portfolios on every trip.

While the recycled plastic feels flimsy, is actually quite flexible, and no matter how I dropped the case or pulled on the sides and the cardholder, I could not cause significant damage. The plastic is more likely to bend to break. The minimalist is also very light and does not add significant weight to your device of any kind.

When you slip your credit cards in the back of minimalist, you can be sure that they are going to slide again accidentally right back out. The case was designed to keep safe your cards, and it does.

The bad:

Those wishing to preserve their iPhone's dashing good looks and sleek form factor should go on the hunt for another case now: the practical — minimalist — while is very uncomfortable.

The credit card holder on the back makes the device feel thick and bulky, and as if it were a little too big for the small, stylish device buried inside.

Sides of the case actually stick out a little further in front of your screen, and while this can offer a little more protection when the device face down on a flat surface, personally I don't like. I found that makes the case more than a magnet powder and Pocket fluff, which has a tendency to Wedge itself between the gap which runs up the sides of the case.

To illustrate this point, here is a comparison between the minimalist and case 4 feather Incipio that I reviewed a while ago:

You'll notice that the case Incipio (right) sides sit closely against the iPhone, behind the screen and prevent any dust collection between the case and your device — even looks and feel a lot nicer, I think.

Verdict:

I admire the ecological approach of minimalist, as much as I think it could go a little more effort in its design to give him a better fit and feel. For those seeking to merge their iPhone case and wallet, there are better solutions, more elegant than the minimalist. As the sleeve of leather Marware Glide.
